Ever since the dawning of modern mountaineering in Japan in the Meiji era, the peaks of Hakuba have been sought after by climbing enthusiasts from all over. Hakuba’s villagers have always greeted these adventurers with great hospitality, supporting them and often acting as guides. Ever since the popularity of skiing began growing in the Taisho period, Hakuba has also been showing great warmth and friendly service to skiers coming in off the hills. Hakuba is said to be the birthplace of the word minshoku. It is with the aim of showing this warmth to Hakuba’s visitors, and providing the chance to really get to know the village, that the idea of the Hakuba Meister was conceived.
